Why compostable plastics don't break down in a landfill

Compostable plastic needs heat, oxygen, and moisture. A landfill provides none of those.

It is one of the most common misunderstandings in waste: the idea that a compostable cup or fork is fine in the trash because it will “break down anyway.” It won't.

What a landfill actually is

A modern landfill is engineered to be the opposite of a compost pile. It is compacted to push out air, sealed with daily cover to keep water from moving through it, and lined to keep liquids from reaching groundwater. The result is a dense, anaerobic environment where almost nothing decomposes the way you'd expect.

What compostable plastics need

  • Sustained heat at 131–140 °F
  • Free oxygen — they are designed for aerobic breakdown
  • Active moisture in contact with the surface
  • Microbial activity from a balanced, working compost matrix

A landfill gives them none of that. Compostable items in a landfill either sit intact for decades or, in the partial-decay zones, release methane — a greenhouse gas roughly 80 times more potent than CO₂ over a 20-year horizon. The only way a compostable product delivers on its label is when it gets to a composter.
